Goa University

Goa University was established under the Goa University Act of 1984 and commenced operations on 1 June 1985. The university provides higher education in the Indian state of Goa.

After the annexation of Goa by India in December 1961, the University of Bombay, (now Mumbai) offered affiliation through its Centre of Post-Graduate Instruction and Research  to the first colleges that were instituted in Goa in June 1962. 

Since 1985 Goa University offers graduate and post-graduate studies and research programme. It is currently (2014) accredited to the NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) in India with a rating of four stars. It is located on the Taleigao Plateau.

Institutes of Higher Education in Colonial Goa:

 The first institutes of Higher Education were set up by the Portuguese administration in the nineteenth century, the main being the Academia Militar (Military Academy) (1817), later expanded into the None of these institutions were considered University – degree granting institutions. “The courses offered by the Lyceum were broad-based with a view to providing good cultural and scientific foundations for the students aiming at higher studies as well as those who were on the threshold of public life.” (Varde 61) Persons wishing to pursue university education of four or five years duration had to travel to British India or to Europe.

Delhi University

The University of Delhi was established in 1922 as a unitary, teaching and residential university by an Act of the then Central Legislative Assembly. When the University Grants Commission started establishing Centres of Advanced Studies in the country, 6 were awarded to the University of Delhi out of a total of 18 such centres in the early sixties. 

The University of Delhi has been consistently placed at the NO.1 rank by the India Today survey for many years. The campus is now spread across 69 acres of green, hilly terrain and its buildings blend attractively with the natural surroundings.

 The various departments are located in the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Inter-disciplinary and Applied Sciences. S.P. Jain Centre for Management Studies is also located at the South Delhi Campus. Besides these, the campus has a good library, a Health Centre, a Bank, a Post Office, DTC Pass Section and administrative and examination blocks. South campus also provides some residential quarters for faculty members and the non-teaching staff. Outstation students are offered accommodation in three hostels.

Mumbai University

The Mumbai University was started in 1857. This is one of the oldest universities in India. the first being the department of Sociology, Civics and Politics. Prior to independence. The university has within its fold 354 affiliated colleges having a total number of 36 departments. The university also imparts education in various professional courses to help the students get a firm establishment in the long run. However, in the later years, the university began to undertake research and post-graduate applications. Beginning with the academic year 1997-98, all the student services and some need-based academic courses were offered by the University from the Sub-Centre. the University of Mumbai initiated an Administrative Sub-Centre at Ratnagiri on September 05, 1989. Only two applications on merit of the needy students from each College/Institution/Department are invited for this Scheme. The Director, Students Welfare sends a circular to all the Colleges demanding the application from the Principal to run this scheme. 

It has two campuses of areas 243 acres and 14 acres at Vidyanagari and Fort respectively; sub-campuses/centers at Ratnagiri 20 acres, Thane 6.50 acres and Kalyan 6.26 acres with 60 University Departments & Institutes and 749 affiliated colleges. It has established its name in industrial & International collaborations and runs various professional courses.
